Such institutes became home to women who were rejected by society. Often, the only “sin“ these women committed was that the people around them believed they were exposed to moral threats. The sisters maintained rule with a rod of iron, mistreating the misfortunate women not only physically, but often psychologically as well. The dwellers were derived all of their rights, possessions and even their names, apart from being locked up. The last asylum was closed as recently as 1996.
